The Plovdiv metropolis model for supporting religious education in recent times

Abstract

After 1944, under the slogans of separating the church from the state, the totalitarian regime gradually expelled the Church and everything related to it from the general education in school, eliminating the existing religious education in Bulgaria. After the changes, there were various attempts to carry out the religious literacy of Bulgarians, with the greatest success coming after overcoming the split in the BOC - BP (2003 - 2004). Since 2007, in the Plovdiv Diocese, the newly elected metropolitan has started implementing a special model for supporting religious education in sync with the official institutions and what is allowed by law. It is related to financial, qualification and spiritual support for teachers teaching the subject Religion (Orthodoxy) in the initial stage of education in Plovdiv and the entire diocese. This paper aims to justify the model and to discuss timely questions that this successful experience raises.
