Abstract

This report examines the origin, ethnic composition, armament, equipment and combat behavior of the Varangian contingent in the Byzantine Empire, with an emphasis on its role as an elite military unit. Based on written sources such as texts written by Michael Pselus, Nikitas Choniates, tactical treatises from the 10th–11th centuries, as well as modern scientific research, the integration of the northern warriors into the Byzantine military system, the organizational structure of the corps and the factors that turned it into a reliable Praetorian guard of the emperor are traced. Particular attention is paid to their armament – with an emphasis on the Danish axe– and to their tactical characteristics as heavy infantry, including the use of a “shield wall” and their actions in night operations and the breaching of fortified positions. By analyzing key battles, such as the ones of Durrës (1081) and Beroe (1122), the report reconstructs the actual combat use of the corps, demonstrating its discipline, offensive power, and strategic role at crucial moments in Byzantine military history. The study highlights the importance of the Varangian detachment both as a striking force and as a politically reliable instrument for the protection of the emperor, and points to opportunities for future interdisciplinary research supported by digital humanities.
