Abstract

Thirty-four years after the fall of communism, Bulgaria's public institutions are inefficient in their provision of social services to the most deprived. This paper takes the case study of a 68-year-old clinical patient with cognitive disorder in Bulgaria who failed to receive sufficient support from public institutions despite being in their attention and analyses this case in order to find the reasons for the failure of institutions. Drawing from social work literature, orthodox anthropology, as well as the broader Christian tradition, we show how the deep incoherencies of institutional care in Bulgaria, results in the failed provision of services to the needy, and the preoccupation with the self-interest in our society leads to inadequate care and human death. We conclude that the only way to tackle the seemingly inspectable challenges standing in the way of the actual provision of coherent and effective care for patients with mental grievances and special needs is to discard the mentality of the not going beyond one's borders of self-interest and to walk two miles, when one is asked to go one (Mat. 5:41). We, social workers and medicial or mental health practitioners, must break the circle, and stop fulfilling our immediate “thin” and formal obligations, while neglecting the core of the problems we are faced with and henceforth lose our patients, and render our work futile, filling our societies with untracked grief.
