Abstract

The following article aims to trace, albeit rather partially, a major subject of that which is known as “traditional Bulgarian religious culture/practice”, associated with the perception of space and time in a particular ritualistic and extra-ritualistic setting. This includes the change of purpose and semantics of certain spaces (and places), within the context of the cultural dynamics of the traditional rural society. This work is focused on the example of the votive offering (obrok) and its consecrated ground – a manifestation of the common Balkan practices of religious festive sacrifice.
