"White Indians" as a cultural phenomenon

differences and connections between its historical and contemporary dimensions and aspects of their influence on Indianist organizations in Europe

Abstract

In his long-term studies of the so-called Indianist organizations, the author analyzes the reasons for the keen European interest in the Native Americans, which led to the emergence of these groups. The particular report is focused on an impressive cultural phenomenon that appears to be such a reason – the “white Indians”. Its roots go back to the history of North America in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, when many Euro- Americans were adopted into various Indian tribes and refused to leave them not only when given the opportunity, but even under duress. The report examines the impact of their life- stories on contemporary Indianists, as well as on the new dimension of the phenomenon after the end of traditional “Indian times”. In the Canadian woods or on the literary field, new “white Indians” become a source of inspiration for members of Indianist organizations, many of whom see themselves as part of the same phenomenon.
