The Belogradchik uprising of 1850 and the reasons for its outbreak through the prism of our customary law

Abstract

The Belogradchik Uprising of 1850 is also known in the literature as the Vidin Uprising, the Uprising of the Peasants of North-West Bulgaria, and, according to many Turkish historians, also as an uprising caused by the regime of the “land lords” in Vidin. The uprising was caused by the unfavourable socio-economic relations that occurred as a result of the social reforms in the Ottoman Empire and the focus of the scientific paper is on the reasons that led to the outbreak of the Belogradchik Uprising which was the first large-scale organized event against the Ottoman rule in Bulgarian history in the first half of the 19th century.
