In 2019 in the small Municipality Straldzha, Sliven District was piloted an international project with a research component. The main aim was to address lack of reproductive rights and to encourage empowerment of 13-14 years girls in four Roma communities in three EU countries – Spain, Romania, Bulgaria. The key question of the study was about mechanisms that influenced Roma girls about their decision to become mothers. The task of local teams was to test a program that will support girls to postpone „marriage“ and birth after their graduation on school or reaching 18 years of age. The report represents results at the formal end of the project in the middle of 2021, but also includes observation in the next two years till August 2023.
