About the Journal

Tereni - eISSN: 2738-7674  is an online scientific periodical journal with double anonymous peer review. The journal was established in 2020 as a continuation of the Ethnologia Academica series (a print edition published since 1999 by the Sofia University Academic Publishing House). By becoming a digital edition, the journal aims at attaining a larger public, becoming more accessible and more efficient. In fact, the dynamics of contemporary social and cultural processes and phenomena – the main object of study for the social sciences – requires timely publication of relevant research.

Tereni is distributed online, has no printing or distribution costs and is a non-commercial journal. Authors, reviewers and editors do not receive payment for their work on the edition, the latter has no funding and is distributed free of charge. Following the example of all electronic journals hosted on Open Journal Systems, Tereni, and all articles published therein, including the journal’s special issues, are available to all readers freely and without charge.

Since its inception, the journal has been included in the National Reference List of Contemporary Bulgarian Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Editions maintained by the National Center for Information and Documentation at the Ministry of Education and Science. All articles published in the journal receive a DOI. The journal is indexed in the Bulgarian Open Science Portal (BPOS), in the Directory of Open Access Scholarly Resources (ROAD ), in OpenAIRE,  Crossref, Google Scholar, Open Alex, CEEOL, Primo and Summon (ProQuest), Dimensions, and is being assed for EBSCO now.

The journal publishes articles in Bulgarian and English and is aimed both at young and established researchers working in the fields of the social sciences, with a preference for ethnology, cultural anthropology, history, folkloristics, museology. The journal encourages formulation of clear, original hypotheses and discussion of topics in social and cultural history, traditional and contemporary culture, museum studies, education, etc. Tereni provides a forum for debate and exchange of ideas between different scientific fields, the published articles being required to contain original empirical material gathered using the specific methods of the respective disciplines.

After reception, proposed texts are peer-reviewed by two scholars specializing in the respective discipline, the process being anonymous for both the authors and the reviewers. Authors are expected to comply with the recommendations of the reviewers and the editorial board. The final decision on publication is made by the editorial board. Authors have the right to appeal the decision using the appropriate procedure and/or to withdraw their manuscript according to the terms provided (link).

All articles published in the journal are freely available to all readers in PDF format on this website, together with digital versions of the full texts of the relevant issues. Authors are therefore required to agree to and accept this policy. When their manuscript is submitted to the OJS system, authors will be asked to confirm their consent to the use of their work under the terms of CC BY 4.0. The details of the agreement will be hyperlinked in the checkbox (or sign it on paper), and authors are encouraged to read it in advance (link). If an author does not agree to the terms of this policy, all electronic submissions will be deleted from the publication system. If a manuscript is rejected at any stage of the review and publication process, it will be retained in the journal's system for a period of five years.

Articles are copyrighted and their contents, in whole or in part, including visual materials, may only be used if the full reference of the article and the author is cited. In accordance with its electronic security and preservation policy, Tereni is committed to protecting published research by ensuring accessibility and maintaining its own digital archive. Readers have free access to the full text of articles published in the journal on the Tereni website, where both full issues and individual articles are available. The website has been created in compliance with the EU Web and Mobile Accessibility Directive (link) and the European Accessibility Act (link) through the use of Open Journal Systems (OJS(link)) software which presents content in a standardised web layout, optimised for interpretation and reproduction by digital accessibility tools.

The use of Open Journal Systems (OJS) content management software enables automatic digital preservation of all published content through the Public Knowledge Project Preservation Network (PKP PN). This service, based on the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) program, provides digital preservation of OJS journals, ensuring long-term preservation and access to the authentic original version of the journal content. In the event of a triggering event, such as the journal or publisher ceasing operations, all preserved digital content within PKP PN will be made available to the public. All issues of the journal are also available on the Bulgarian Open Science Portal.

Tereni is a collaborative journal resulting from the combined effort of its contributors and the Editorial Team. The Editorial Team consists of an Editorial Board and a International Advisory Board. The Editorial Board is responsible for the preparation of the issues. The board’s members are researchers affiliated with the Faculty of History at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski”. The International Advisory Board includes members of reputable Bulgarian and foreign academic institutions and focuses on the "big picture", discussing the aims, scope and direction of the journal.

Issues of Tereni are published at least once a year, but special issues are also released, as well as supplements, usually containing selected papers from graduate and undergraduate research forums. The articles and materials are systematically organized in sections covering a wide range of topics and issues in the social sciences.
