За отношението на Светополк към дейността на Св. Методий и учениците му в Моравия (870 – 886 г.)

Svatopluk’s negative attitude towards Methodius or, at least the weak support of the ruler for him, is widely accepted in historiography. However, there are arguments in the opposite direction. Most likely, after the imprisonment of St. Methodius (870), it was Svatopluk who informed Pope John VIII about what had happened. After the return of the Pannonian archbishop in Moravia, he was part of the policy of increasing the influence of Moravia in Bohemia and in the area around the Vistula. In 879, the Latin clergy complained to the Pope about Svatopluk's support for St. Methodius. St. Methodius’s journey to Constantinople was coordinated with Svatopluk and the papacy. After the death of St. Methodius, Gorazd assumed the leading position in the Moravian Church, until Wiching returned from Rome with a forged papal letter. The refusal of the followers of St. Methodius to consent to the additions to the Nicene Creed, advocated in the papal letter, led to the following persecutions.Абстракт
В историографията е застъпено мнението за отрицателното отношение на Светополк към Методий или най-малкото за слабата подкрепа на този владетел за солунчанина. Все пак има аргументи в обратната посока. Най-вероятно след задържането на св. Методий от баварското духовенство, тъкмо Светополк информира папството за случилото се. След завръщането си Панонският архиепископ участва в политиката на Светополк за увеличаване на моравското влияние в Бохемия и района около Висла. През 879 г. латинските духовници се оплакват пред папата от Светополк заради подкрепата му към св. Методий, смятан от тях за еретик. Пътуването на св. Методий до Константинопол е съгласувано с папството и Светополк. Може да се предполага, че след смъртта на архиепископа Горазд поема ръководната роля в Моравската църква до връщането на Вихинг от Рим с подправено папско писмо. Отказът на последователите на св. Методий да приемат допълненията към Символа на вярата, защитени в папското писмо, води до последвалите гонения.
