Abstract

“Black Mirror” (2011-) is a qualitatively different series compared to the mass-produced production on platforms in several ways. First of all, in terms of format – the number of episodes is significantly smaller and there is no single storyline and characters that develop throughout all episodes and seasons. Each episode is a complete standalone film, with its own dramaturgy, setting, different actors and directors. The other qualitative difference that distinguishes “Black Mirror” from other mass productions is the dramaturgical foundation on which they develop each episode. It falls into the realm of fantasy genre, but the series are positioned very precisely in a particular reality, not quite typical of fantasy plots, which I would call intermediate – the viewer feels like they are watching contemporary reality, as it surrounds us today, but one step ahead. The title “Black Mirror” itself comes from the effect of a dimmed monitor/screen that reflects the viewer sitting in front of it like a dark mirror. This is precisely the main focus of the series – to show, as a reflection, what the modern digital society and world is becoming back to the audience.
