Learner motivation as a starting point in teaching a far eastern language

The paper focuses on the trends and prospects in the teaching of Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages in Bulgaria through the prism of student motivation. Changes in the economic, social and cultural environment in the last three decades have led to a change in the profile of those wishing to study a Far Eastern language. The focus is shifting from the pursuit of academic preparation for the purpose of future professional realization to studying the language as a hobby for the purpose of traveling to the country or better understanding pop culture. This change in motivation also leads to the need to change the educational process and create new forms of language teaching, as well as the development of dual educational models combining a Far Eastern language with a major outside the linguistic field.
