This text is a poignant “farewell” (a play on words, literally: “Go with God”) from the great Russian scientist Professor N. N. Glubokovsky to his teacher, Professor A. Lebedev. Written as a biographical remembrance, it sheds significant light on the remarkable contributions of Professor Lebedev to Church-historical science. Lebedev dedicated himself selflessly to his work, tirelessly laboring day and night despite the toll on his health. The method of writing history “with word and blood,” as bequeathed by Professor Lebedev, stands as a testament to the enduring strength and impact of his work, embodying the immense energy and fruitfulness of the human spirit, inspired by “the Father of lights” (James 1:17). Although Russia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was a prime context for Orthodox theology, opposition from Church authorities towards authentic teachers and researchers persisted. Despite recognizing theology as the voice of the Father of Lights, the text remains a powerful tribute to Lebedev’s legacy.
