INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

 

TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

The International Journal “Neohellenica Balcanica” accepts manuscripts in English and Greek.

The journal will consider the following text types:

1.                Research Articles

The articles that present the results of the original research study are considered as research articles. These manuscripts should describe how the research project was conducted and provide a thorough analysis of the results of the project. Research articles should not be more than 20 standard pages (36000 characters with space). The research articles should include the following in the order given below:

    Abstract

    Keywords

    Introduction

    Materials and Methods

    Results including Tables and/or Figures

    Discussion

    Conclusion

    Acknowledgments

    References (Chicago-Style Citation)

    Appendixes [if necessary]

    Abbreviations used [if necessary]

    Author’s affiliation 

2.                Reviews and Mini-Reviews

Review articles should not be more than 20 standard pages (36000 characters with space). All format requirements are similar to those applicable to Research articles. The Review articles should contain comprehensive coverage of relevant literature. Review articles should preferably be written by scientists who have in-depth knowledge of the topic. Review articles need not be divided into sections such as Materials and methods, and Results and discussion, but should definitely have an abstract and introduction.

3.                Current Researches

Information on current research in the thematic areas of the Journal. The information should not exceed 5000 characters with spaces and should present clear, concise and informative directions in current research and the expected results of them, as well as the deadlines for achieving them. Information on current research that establishes and uses networks of scientists and research centers is encouraged. All format requirements are similar to those applicable to Research articles. 

4.                Reviews of scientific congresses, scientific forums, round tables

Reviews of scientific congresses, scientific forums and round tables should not exceed 7000 characters with spaces. All format requirements are similar to those applicable to Research articles. They should provide brief but rich information about the program of the scientific forum and the most important scientific results reported at it.

5.                Presentations of current or completed scientific projects

Presentations of current or completed scientific projects should not exceed 5000 characters with spaces. All format requirements are similar to those applicable to Research articles. They should contain detailed information (including project number, web page, project participants, institutions involved in the project, budget, deadlines, etc.) on ongoing or completed scientific projects in the thematic areas of the Journal. The presentation should include essential information on the expected/achieved results and on the established connections and networks between scientists and/or scientific institutions.

 

6.                Reviews of new books

Reviews of new books should not exceed 8000 characters with spaces. All format requirements are similar to those applicable to Research articles. They present summaries and evaluations of monographs, collective monographs, collective volumes and scientific-auxiliary literature (editions of primary sources, textbooks, teaching materials etc.) related to the thematic areas of the Journal. The reviews also provide a full bibliographic description of the reviewed book.

7.                Information on the Neohellenistic Community

Information on the activities of the Neohellenistic Community should not exceed 4000 characters with spaces. All format requirements are similar to those applicable to Research articles. They should briefly and accurately describe specific events organized by or with the participation of Neohellenists from Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Slovenia and Cyprus, related to scientific, cultural, educational and other forums, events, presentations, art installations etc.

Manuscripts  should be saved as Word file (*.doc or *.docx)

Page layout: The main text must be typed on standard A4 paper, with 1.5 line spacing, Times New Roman font, size 12 pt, and justified alignment of the main text. Margins (top, bottom, left, right) should be 2.5 cm; first-line indentation should be 1.25 cm. Footnotes must be in 10 pt font, and must have continuous numbering, and be placed at the bottom of the page. 

    Abstract (up to 200 words)

    Keywords (up to five words/phrases)

    Introduction

    Materials and Methods

    Results including Tables and/or Figures

    Discussion

    Conclusion

    Acknowledgments

    References (Chicago-Style Citation)

Manuscripts

    Romanized author(s)' names (for publications in Greek)

    Title in English (for publications in Greek)

    Abstract in English (for publications in Greek)

    Keywords in English.

 

-         should continue with the ordered sections:

Introduction

    Materials and Methods

    Results including Tables and/or Figures

    Discussion

    Conclusion,

and should end with the sections of:

    Acknowledgments

    Notes

    References

    Appendixes [if necessary]

    Abbreviations used [if necessary]

The title page should begin as follows:

Describes the main objective(s) of the study

Summarizes the most important results and their significance

 Keywords in English (up to 6) 

Tables and charts

Tables, charts and figures should be numbered and included in the text at the place where they are mentioned for the first time and not separately at the end of the text.

CITATION REQUIREMENTS ​

The journal “Neohellenica Balcanica uses” the Chicago-Style Citation.

NB!

TRANSLITERATION

Any title that is not written originally in Latin alphabet (e.g. Greek or Cyrillic alphabet) must be transliterated into Latin alphabet. In the bibliographic citation, the transliterated Latin version is first indicated, followed by the original title in square brackets.

The basic principle of citation are, as follows:

1.     Notes and Bibliography

In the Notes and Bibliography system, add a numbered footnote at the bottom of the page to cite another source in-text. Then, include the complete citation information in a bibliography at the end of your paper. 

General format:

1.1. Notes
1. First and Last Name(s) of Authors, Title of the Source, and other publication details like the publisher, journal information, date, page numbers, etc. 

In the notes, elements of a reference are separate by a comma. A book publisher and/or year are included in parenthesis ( ).

Shortened Notes

2. Ibid., page number(s).

3. Last Name, Shortened Title, page number(s). 

Use "Ibid.," which means "in the same place," when you are citing the same source immediately after another note. Use a shortened note the second time you cite the same source elsewhere.

If you have to cite a letter, photograph, text document, graphic material, or ephemera consult the Gerth Archives Chicago Citation Guide for Archival Materials.

Author-Date In-text Citations

Basic Format:
(Author Year, Page Number)

Two Authors

Connect both authors' last names with "and," followed by the year, followed by a comma and the page number you are citing.

(Baer and Long 2004, 167)

Three Authors

List each author's last name separated with a comma, with "and" before the third author, followed by the year, followed by a comma and the page number you are citing.

(Mulvey, Rogers, and van Den Oever 2015, 78)

1.2. Bibliography - general format

Last Name, First Name and First Name Last Name. "Title of an Article." Title of the Source and other publication details like the publisher, journal information, date, page numbers, etc. 

In the bibliography at the end of your paper, elements of a reference are separated by a period. Include a comma , before the year.

A. Citing Journal Article 

1.                 Author(s) In the notes, list all authors as normal. In the bibliography, list the first author's last name first.

2.                 "Title of the Article" Use headline capitalization and quotation marks.

3.                 Title of the Journal Use title capitalization and italicize.

4.                 Volume Include the volume number of the journal.

5.                 Issue Number If there are multiple issues in a journal, include a comma, after the volume and no.#.

6.                 (Year): Include the year the article was published in parentheses, followed by a colon :

7.                 Page range xx–xx.

8.                 DOI (Digital Object Identifier) If the journal article has a DOI, include it last.

2.                 Year. Include the year the article was published.

3.                 "Title of the Article" Use headline capitalization and quotation marks.

4.                 Title of the Newspaper or Magazine Use title capitalization and italicize, followed by a comma.

5.                 Date Include the Month Day, Year the article was published.

6.                 URL Include a link to the article if available online.

3.                 "Title of the Chapter or Essay" Use headline capitalization and quotation marks.

4.                 Title of the Book Include "In" then the the book in headline capitalization and italics.

5.                 Name of the Editor(s) Include "edited by" or "translated by" in the bibliography before the name of the editor(s) or translator, followed by a comma.

6.                 Page numbers Include the page range of the chapter you are citing.

7.                 Place of publication: List the state (if from the U.S.) or the country associated with the published, then a colon :.

8.                 Publisher List the publisher of the book. This is usually listed on the copyright page.
