Abstract

This paper examines a structural group of terms, referred to by Maria Popova as „terms with an expression structure” – complex phrases that incorporate a detached participle. The author perceives them as a drawback in terminology and neither defines, nor analyses them. The aim of the text is, on the one hand, to present the opinions of other authors on the matter and to propose a working definition for the structural group. On the other hand, to isolate terms that correspond to this definition in European legal terminology within the field of healthcare and to compare them in three languages – two Slavic ones (Bulgarian and Polish) and one non-related, serving as a source of borrowing (English). The comparison shows that terms with an expression structure are the least frequent in the source language, indicating their independent terminological choice in the Slavic languages rather than a result of direct borrowing. A notable distinction among the related languages is that in Polish these terms are more frequent and diverse, highlighting a better predisposition towards them in Polish term creation.
