Guidelines

General information

The Philologia journal accepts for peer review articles, reviews and short scientific communications in the following subject areas: general and applied linguistics, literary studies, translation, cultural studies and methodology of foreign language teaching with a specific focus on interdisciplinary and cross-boundary studies, multilingualism and transculturalism. Articles should be up to 20 standard pages in length (where 1 standard page is 1800 characters).

Peer-reviewed works in the journal are published in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian or Bulgarian (with an abstract and bibliography in Bulgarian and English).

The texts of the proposed articles are to be sent to philologia@uni-sofia.bg, in accordance with the requirements on the website.

Submitted manuscripts are reviewed for compliance with the author requirements by the appointed editors from the editorial board. Manuscripts that do not adhere with the set requirements are returned to the authors for revision. The remaining manuscripts are accepted for peer review. The members of the editorial board are not permitted to publish articles, reviews and short scientific communications.

Every article should include the following sections in the indicated sequence:

  • Title: The title should preferably be a single short sentence with no rare abbreviations. The use of interrogative form is not recommended.

  • Author’s profile: It includes the names of the authors, their institutional e-mail address, ORCID and the name and address of the academic institution they belong to .

  • Abstract: It includes the goals and methodologies of their research, the results, and the novelty of the research produced.

  • Kew words: 3–5 words or phrases, delineating the essence of the research in accordance with the subject of the article.

    Note: The title, the author’s profile and the keywords should be translated in English in addition to the language of publication. The abstract should not be written in the passive voice.

  • Introduction: It reflects the current relevance and condition of the issue that is to be studied in the article. It is mandatory that the methodologies and limitations of the research are presented.

  • Body: This section of the article can be separated into several parts with the use of subtitles. It should present the main points and the results of the study. The end should include a discussion of the results and their significance. It is recommended that the body includes tables, figures and formulas as a part of the scientific apparatus.

  • Findings and conclusions: This section presents whether and to what extent the goals of the research have been met.

  • Acknowledgments and funding: This section includes the authors’ acknowledgements of certain people and organisations for their contribution to the research. It indicates the project and the funding organisation (Research Fund) under which the research was completed. This section of the article must also be translated in English.

  • Reference list: The standard BDS ISO 690: 2021 with the method name – year and expanded bibliographic description should be used for the references. For more details see Bibliography Formatting.

 


Formatting the manuscript’s bibliography

The Philologia journal employs the BDS ISO 690: 2021 standard with the Name-year expanded bibliographic description for the reference list.

The in-text citation for such a reference would be the following: (Gogova, 2025).

If the cited literature is originally written in Cyrillic, two analogical entries are to be made—in Cyrillic and in Latin writing:

It would be beneficial to include the relevant pages in the text, as such (Shanova 2017, p. 351).

Please note that:

  1. In English, the journal is cited as Philologia;
  2. The name of this and any journal is written in italics;
  3. When citing the Philologia journal, the ISSN 0204-8779, the number (no./ №), and the volume (vol./т.), which the cited article belongs to, must be indicated. The range of the pages of the article within the volume must also be cited.
  4. If the article has an assigned doi, then indicating it in the bibliography is mandatory.

If the publication is in Latin (in English) and the cited source is published in Bulgarian but has an official duplicate English title, it should appear in the list of references with its duplicate title as follows:

Proofs

Before the manuscripts accepted for publication are published, authors receive proofs of their articles, which they must return to the editorial office within one week. Major changes to the text are not permitted at this stage.

Printouts

Authors are notified of publication by letter containing a PDF of their articles, which they can use to prepare an unlimited number of printouts of their work for use in their career development or in communication with other researchers.

Final words

The publication of the submitted materials is determined by the recommendations of the reviewers and does not necessarily imply the editorial board's agreement with the views expressed by the authors. Publication in this journal is free of charge for both the authors and their scientific or educational organizations.
