MICHEL-DIMITRI CALVOCORESSI AND THE TRANSLATION OF RUSSIAN VOCAL MUSIC

Abstract

This paper examines the translation work of the Franco-British music critic Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi (1877–1944), focusing on his translations of Russian vocal music. Despite their importance, these translations have received little scholarly attention.
Calvocoressi’s work played a key role in spreading Russian repertoire in Europe during the first third of the 20th century. This study reviews his translations, assesses their scale, and situates them within their historical and cultural context. To understand his approach, it draws on his memoirs (1934) and his article “The Practice of Song-Translation” (1921). These sources reveal his careful method for handling the complex challenges of song translation: maintaining intonation, rhythm, and meaning; respecting the composer’s musical phrasing, and making only carefully considered adjustments to preserve musical expressiveness.
As a result of this approach, Calvocoressi did more than a technical task. By translating and publishing vocal works in languages accessible to performers and audiences, he made the music easier to include in concert programs and published editions. His translations thus facilitated the wider dissemination of Russian works and contributed significantly to intercultural exchange.
