Created by Harlan Guthrie, “Malevolent” (2020-present) is a cosmic horror podcast focused on the characters of Arthur Lester and John Doe, an entity residing in his eyes. Over the course of six seasons, the podcast tells the story of their struggle for survival and the friendship they develop. Throughout the podcast, Arthur and John face various obstacles that challenge the notions of what it means to be human and to change as a person. Due to the fact that Arthur is a composer, the podcast features both diegetic and non-diegetic music, which is used to create tension, convey information about the setting, and depict the psychological state of the characters. Through its approach to music, “Malevolent” explores the subject of violence, betrayal, and forgiveness, and shows the importance of music as a narrative tool in horror storytelling.
