Електронни списания, престиж и икономически аспекти в издаването на научни списания

В статията си „Електронни списания, престиж и икономически аспекти в издаването на научни списания“ Стивън Тотоси де Запетнек и Джошуа Джиа обсъждат съвременното състояние на издателския бранш на академичните списания. Съвременното състояние на отрасъла представлява олигополен, двойно кредитиран модел, в който учените произвеждат продукта си безплатно, само за да могат издателите да получат значителни маржове на печалбата, продавайки този продукт обратно на учените. Издателите могат да постъпват по този начин поради липсата на ценова гъвкавост и слабата способност за преговори на основния им потребител, университетските библиотеки. Способността на издателите да увеличават цените се поддържа също и от това, което авторите наричат „ефект на мултиплицирания престиж“ и „изтласкващ ефект на престижа“, с което обозначават тенденцията библиотеките да орязват откупките от малките издатели, докато големите издатели повишават цените, тъй като големите издатели са по-престижни. Към днешна дата използването на електронните списания не е променило този основен модел. Тотоси де Зепетнек и Джиа твърдят, че за да се стигне до един по-справедлив модел на управление на знанието, който позволява глобалното разпространение на знанието и се противопоставя на „колониализма на знанието“, е необходима промяна в отношението и практиките не само на издателите, но и на учените. Когато схващанията се променят и електронните списания получат престиж, електронното публикуване на научни изследвания ще замести или поне ще стане равнопоставено на престижа на печатните издания.
