The article presents a literary comparative analysis of a poem from the poetry collection The Eternal and the Holy – The Novice, which will be analysed in light of the problematic opposition between abstinence and the constructed archetype of the abstainer, on the one hand, and the surrender of the traumatised modernist consciousness to the impulses of the flesh in contrast with the spiritual belonging to the Christian canon, on the other. The subject of our study will be the complex mental interaction between dwelling in the spiritual and physical parametres of Christianity, on the one hand, and the temptation of secular life, and the allure of the subjective romantic excitement, on the other.
