Reporting verbs in direct speech
a contrastive study between Czech and Italian

This paper deals with the use of reporting verbs in direct speech in Czech and Italian. Although verba dicendi are commonly cited as reporting verbs, corpus data and literary texts show that verbs outside this category can also serve as such. The aim of this study is to characterize the reporting verbs outside the category of verba dicendi that are used in the reporting clause of direct speech in Czech and Italian and to examine their use in the two languages. While Italian mainly uses verbs of speaking, Czech engages a richer repertoire of expressions.
