Aspect in Polish and French in the light of Karolak’s theory

Polish and French are languages that have not grammaticalized the category of aspect in the same way. The verbal morphology of Polish clearly shows the opposition between perfectivity and imperfectivity, whereas that of French does not. French verbal morphology, on the other hand, shows the aspectual opposition between resultativity and non-resultativity (processivity). It does so through compound and simple verb forms. In turn, this opposition is not grammaticalized in Polish. This non-correspondence between Polish and French poses problems for analysis, even if some verbal uses remedy this. This article will show how one can specify this picture of (non)correspondences from the theory of aspect developed by Stanisław Karolak.
